Why the Clock-In Method Matters
The way employees clock in affects accuracy, speed, hygiene, and compliance. Choosing the wrong method can lead to buddy punching, frustrated employees, or a broken device on a Monday morning.
Fingerprint Readers
Fingerprint terminals are reliable in clean, dry environments. They're fast (under 1 second per scan) and cost-effective. However, in industrial settings — kitchens, manufacturing floors, construction sites — oils, dust, and cuts reduce read accuracy significantly.
- Best for: Offices, retail, tech companies
- Avoid for: Warehouses, food production, field crews
NFC / RFID Cards
NFC cards (and key fobs) are the most universal option. They work regardless of hand condition, gloves, or lighting. Modern NFC readers also support Apple Wallet and Google Wallet — employees tap with their phone instead of a card.
- Best for: Any environment, especially industrial or outdoor
- Avoid if: Card sharing (buddy punching) is a concern without a secondary verification
Face Recognition
Face recognition terminals are contactless and hands-free — ideal for post-COVID hygiene preferences. They're also harder to fool than cards. TimeClock 365 biometric terminals support face + fingerprint + NFC on the same device.
- Best for: High-traffic entrances, clean environments, access-controlled areas
- Note: Requires good lighting; performance varies in outdoor settings
Our Recommendation
For most organizations, NFC + face recognition on the same terminal gives the best coverage. Use NFC as the primary method and face recognition as a backup — or use face recognition for access control and NFC for attendance.
TimeClock 365 supports all three methods on the same platform, with no separate systems to manage. See our terminal options →
